I'm Back. . . Camp and Sunday Reflections
06/17/07 10:33 PM
Wow, what a week -
what a day! I had every intention of posting on
Friday or Saturday. Got back from Senior Week of
Camp mid day on Friday, went to the church and
never stopped running until tonight. Camp by the
way was great! Had just over 100 high school
students and really had a great week. I was the
Family Leader of probably one of the best group of
kids I have been with at Camp in a long time. I
think we only won like one sporting event all week,
but we just had a lot of fun together! Our kids
memorized a combined total of 203 memory verses!
Also, had a great co-leader in Brittany Murphy(no,
not the actress). She just finished her freshman
year at the College of Charleston and she along
with several other college students there
definitely raised my level of hope for this next
generation. It was also great being at camp with my
daughter Lydia. We've been going to camp together
for quite a number of years and she never ceases to
amaze me. She is becoming quite a special young
woman. Jeremiah was there as well and is back at
camp again this week for Junior High Week. He did a
great job and made me very proud to say that he was
from Coastal!
Friday and Saturday
was all about catch up and getting ready for
Sunday. I also had a wedding on Saturday. I got a
lot of work done on my sermon during the week at
camp (at least I thought I did), but I didn't get
home from the church until about 1AM. And then I
got up at 6:15AM this morning. But today was
awesome! First of all it was Father's Day, but it
was not the typical Father's Day at Coastal. It
wasn't typical in that that wasn't the focus. The
focus today was on our purpose - sharing LIFE! We
talked about our mission in the context of today's
post Christian culture. It was one of the strongest
messages I've given. And what I keep discovering is
that our church thrives on it's Pastor passionately
communicating our vision. And the exciting thing is
that we are starting to see the fruit of that
passion and renewed focus. Every week new people
are coming. There is this new sense of excitement
and expectation in the air!
A few other highlights from today were our new t-shirts (one of which was proudly worn by me today - thanks Susan Johnson) and our water bottle invitations that we gave out today. Our new series, "Reel to Real" officially kicks off this Saturday with a "Movie on the Lawn" Community Event. We'll have a jump castle, obstacle course, hotdogs, popcorn, snow cones, drinks, live music, and a family movie (probably "The Incredibles") on a 16' X 21' outdoor movie screen. The event will begin at 7 with the movie starting around 8:30. Bring chairs and blankets! It's going to be quite an evening. Then on Sunday morning we kick off our corresponding series, "Reel to Real." The water bottles have custom made labels (thanks again Susan) advertising the event and series. We still have a lot of bottles so give me a call and come pick up a bunch at the church this week to pass out in the community. Oh yeah, another highlight was me saying that, "I'll punch you in the throat" if I see anyone in our church drinking these water bottles and not handing them out. Your Pastor obviously watches too much UFC.
After church we came home and I grilled steaks for Father's Day. I was looking forward to that steak all week and it did not disappoint! My family then blessed me with several Father's Day gifts. We then packed up Christopher and headed back to Branchville, SC to take him to Junior High Week of Camp. This is the first time in a long time that I've not been at camp with Christopher. I will definitely miss him this week. He is quite a dude! On the way home we stopped at the Churn (a Branchville tradition) for a milkshake. When Janet and I finally got home - I crashed for about a 3 hour nap!
The week ahead is going to be very busy - getting ready for Saturday, the new series, and the following week of camp. I'm the Dean of Intermediate Week of Camp (10 & 11 year olds). We already have 108 campers pre-registered. Keep me in your prayers. Anyway, I'm back. I missed my wife and son, and I missed you! (I actually missed blogging too!)
